Slice the potatoes into 2 mm thick rounds.
Melt the butter and mix in the salt, black pepper, and thyme.
Butter an ovenproof pan.
Arrange the potatoes in circular layers, brushing each layer with butter.
Cook the pan over medium heat for 10 minutes, until the bottom layer takes color.
Transfer the pan to a 190°C oven and bake for 35 minutes, until the potatoes are tender.
Invert the cake, rest for 8 minutes, then slice.
