Dry the bread slices in a pan or a 180°C oven for 5 minutes until lightly toasted so they absorb milk well.
Put the milk in a pot, add sugar, salt, and cinnamon, bring near a boil, and stir to dissolve the sugar.
Pit the dates, halve them, and let them steep in the hot milk for 2 to 3 minutes.
Arrange the bread slices in a serving dish and pour the hot date milk over them, making sure no dry parts remain.
If desired, drizzle 1 tablespoon melted butter on top; once at room temperature, rest in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
Before serving, sprinkle optional walnuts or pistachios on top and serve cold.
