Soak the stale bread crumb in milk for 5 minutes and put it in a bowl without squeezing out the excess milk.
Grate half the onion, finely chop the other half, and slice the mushrooms.
Knead the ground beef with the soaked bread, egg, grated onion, Worcestershire sauce, half the salt, and half the black pepper.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties and rest them in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
Sear the patties in vegetable oil for 3 minutes on each side, until colored, then transfer to a plate.
Saute the butter, chopped onion, and mushrooms in the same pan for 7 minutes.
Add the flour and tomato paste, fry for 1 minute, and pour in the meat broth gradually.
Return the patties to the sauce and cook with the lid slightly open for 14 minutes, then serve hot.
💡 Tip: Chill the patties for 10 minutes before putting them in the pan; they sear without falling apart in the sauce.
🍽️ Serving suggestion: Serve Salisbury steak like a classic diner plate with optional mashed potatoes, boiled peas, and mushroom gravy.
