Soak the salted beef brisket in cold water to reduce excess salt.
Place the dried peas in a cloth bag or strainer bag.
Boil the beef in plenty of water in a large pot until tender.
Add the pea bag to the pot, then add the firm vegetables in order.
Add the cabbage and potatoes toward the end and cook without letting the vegetables fall apart.
Mash the peas with butter and black pepper, then serve with the beef and vegetables.
