Chop the onions thinly.
Caramelize the onions with half the butter over low heat for 18 minutes.
Divide the ground beef into 4 flat meatballs and season with salt and pepper.
Cook the meatballs in a hot pan for 3 minutes on each side.
Put cheese, meatballs, caramelized onions and cheese again on rye bread.
